After 27 years of terrifying guests with swarming cockroaches and giant spiders, Disney’s Animal Kingdom has officially closed the curtain on “It’s Tough to Be a Bug”—and what took its place today is already making headlines.
WDW News Today reports that “Zootopia: Better Zoogether,” a brand-new 4D show experience, debuted this morning (November 7, 2025) inside the iconic Tree of Life Theater. The timing couldn’t be better—Zootopia 2 hits theaters in just three weeks on November 26.
What’s the Show About?
Forget bugs. We’re talking bunnies, foxes, and a whole lot of howling.
The new show brings guests into the world of Zootopia for “Zoogether Day LIVE!”—a citywide celebration broadcast hosted by an all-new character: Heidi Howler, described as a “slick-talking wolf” with plenty of energy and enthusiasm (and yes, lots of howling).
Guests don “Carrot Vision” glasses—Disney’s playful take on 3D eyewear—to join the celebration as residents from Zootopia’s diverse biomes come together for performances and festivities. Fan-favorite characters Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde are front and center, bringing the charm and humor that made the original 2016 film a massive hit.
Why This Change Matters
The decision to replace “It’s Tough to Be a Bug” has been brewing for years. While the original show was a nostalgic opening-day attraction that debuted with the park in 1998, it earned a reputation for being too intense for younger kids. Between the stink bugs, animatronic spiders dropping from above, and that infamous “stinger” effect in the seats, more than a few families left the theater in tears.
“Zootopia: Better Zoogether” takes a completely different approach—focusing on celebration, inclusivity, and fun rather than jump scares. It’s a shift that aligns better with Animal Kingdom’s evolving identity as a park that celebrates nature and wildlife (even if they’re animated).
More Zootopia Is Coming
The show isn’t the only new Zootopia experience opening today. Disney is also launching a Nick and Judy meet-and-greet at Animal Kingdom, giving guests the chance to snap photos with the unlikely detective duo.
With Zootopia 2 on the horizon and Disney clearly betting big on the franchise’s staying power, this feels like just the beginning. Could we see more Zootopia-themed experiences across Disney parks in the future? It’s starting to look that way.
Our Take
We love seeing Disney retire attractions that no longer fit the park’s vibe—especially when the replacement brings something fresh and family-friendly. “It’s Tough to Be a Bug” had a good run, but it’s time to let the next generation of Animal Kingdom attractions shine.
If you’re planning a trip to Animal Kingdom soon, this is one to add to your list. Plus, you’ll get to experience it before the inevitable Zootopia 2 crowds descend next month.
The Tree of Life Theater just got a whole lot friendlier—and we’re here for it.
