Port Canaveral has officially claimed the crown as the worlds busiest cruise port, edging out longtime leader PortMiami by fewer than 38,000 passengers. According to official data released by Port Canaveral on December 2, 2025, the Florida port processed 8,602,047 passenger movements during fiscal year 2025 (October 1, 2024 to September 30, 2025), narrowly surpassing Miamis 8,564,225 passengers.
This marks the second time Port Canaveral has achieved this distinction—the first being in 2022—and represents the highest number of cruise passengers in the ports history. Thats a 13 percent increase over the previous fiscal year.
What Drove the Record-Breaking Numbers
The arrival of Royal Caribbeans Star of the Seas—the worlds largest cruise ship—played a significant role in pushing Port Canaveral over the top. The megaship made Port Canaveral its homeport this year, bringing thousands of additional passengers through the terminals each week.
But its not just about one ship. Port Canaveral currently serves as the homeport for 18 cruise ships across seven different cruise brands, handling more than 1,000 sailings annually. The port also welcomed Princess Cruises and Celebrity Cruises for the first time last winter, diversifying its cruise line portfolio and expanding its passenger base.
Why Port Canaveral Is Positioned to Stay on Top
This isnt a flash-in-the-pan achievement. Port Canaveral has been strategically investing in infrastructure to maintain and expand its cruise dominance. The port is currently executing the Port Canaveral Advantage, a massive $912 million five-year capital improvement initiative.
The expansion plans include:
These improvements are designed to make sailing from Central Florida even more accessible and convenient for cruisers, positioning Port Canaveral to not just defend its title but potentially widen the gap in the years ahead.
What This Means for Cruisers
For travelers planning a cruise, Port Canaverals status as the worlds busiest port reflects several advantages. The competition between Port Canaveral and Miami has driven both ports to improve facilities, expand offerings, and attract more cruise lines. That means more ship choices, more itineraries, and better terminal experiences for passengers.
Port Canaverals location also offers unique benefits—its closer to Orlandos theme parks and attractions, making it easier to combine a cruise vacation with a pre- or post-cruise Disney World or Universal trip. The ports continued growth suggests cruise lines see strong demand from the Central Florida market, which should translate to competitive pricing and attractive deals for consumers.
The fact that the margin between Port Canaveral and Miami was so slim—less than 0.5 percent—means both ports will likely continue investing heavily to compete for the top spot. And when ports compete, travelers win.
