Royal Caribbean Just Confirmed Icon of the Seas is Moving to TEXAS in 2027

Royal Caribbean announced that Icon of the Seas—the world’s largest cruise ship—will redeploy from Miami to Galveston, Texas in August 2027. The 250,800-ton megaship will begin sailing alternating 6-, 7-, and 8-night Western Caribbean itineraries from the Lone Star State, with bookings now available through April 2028. If you’re a Texas cruiser, this is huge news. Icon of the Seas isn’t just any ship—it’s the largest cruise vessel ever built, measuring 1,198 feet long and 213 feet wide, with capacity for over 10,000 passengers and crew across 20 decks. Until now, the ship has been sailing exclusively from Miami since its debut. Moving it to Galveston signals Royal Caribbean’s serious confidence in the Texas market.

What This Means for Galveston Cruisers

Icon will arrive in Galveston via a 9-night repositioning cruise from Miami in August 2027. Once there, it’ll offer Western Caribbean sailings that alternate between 6, 7, and 8 nights. The 8-night itineraries will include a stop at Royal Caribbean’s private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay—one of the most popular destinations in the cruise industry.

This is a major upgrade for the Galveston cruise scene. While the port already hosts Symphony of the Seas and Liberty of the Seas (both Royal Caribbean ships), Icon represents an entirely different level of scale and amenities. We’re talking over 2,800 staterooms, multiple waterslides, multiple pool areas, specialty dining venues, and the kind of onboard experience that’s been drawing massive crowds in Miami.

The fact that Royal Caribbean is willing to move their flagship vessel—their most buzzworthy ship—to Galveston speaks volumes about the port’s infrastructure and demand. CEO Michael Bayley hinted at this move earlier, teasing reporters with “I wouldn’t be surprised if some big announcement came to Galveston” and “We’re not going to answer that question. But I can tell you it’s coming, baby.”

Why Galveston Can Handle It

Galveston has been positioning itself as a major cruise hub for years. Royal Caribbean invested $125 million in a new cruise terminal there back in 2022, specifically designed to accommodate the world’s largest ships. That investment is now paying off—Icon will be the crown jewel of a growing fleet calling Galveston home.

The move also reflects broader trends in the cruise industry. Galveston offers drive-to convenience for millions of cruisers across Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, and beyond. No flights, no airport hassles, no extra travel costs. For families and couples looking to cruise without the logistical headache, Galveston is ideal.

And Royal Caribbean isn’t the only line betting big on Texas. Carnival and MSC have both made competitive investments in Galveston terminals, turning the port into one of the most important cruise hubs in North America.

What Happens to Miami?

Icon of the Seas will continue sailing from Miami through summer 2027 before making the move. Royal Caribbean hasn’t announced what ship (if any) will replace Icon in Miami, but given the popularity of the Miami market, we’d expect another major vessel to take its place.

For now, if you’ve been eyeing an Icon cruise and prefer to sail from Texas, this is your moment. Bookings are open through April 2028, and given the hype around this ship, we wouldn’t be surprised if the first few sailings fill up quickly.

The world’s largest cruise ship is coming to Texas—and Texas cruisers just won big.
