If you thought Icon of the Seas would stay in Florida forever, think again. Royal Caribbean just announced the world’s largest cruise ship is packing up and heading to Texas—and this changes everything for cruisers in the South.
According to Cruise Industry News, Royal Caribbean revealed on November 12, 2025 that Icon of the Seas will reposition from Miami to Galveston, Texas in August 2027. This isn’t just a minor shuffle—it’s a massive bet on Texas as a cruise powerhouse and a game-changer for anyone who’s tired of flying to Florida.
What This Means for Your Cruise Plans
Starting in August 2027, Icon of the Seas will sail six- to eight-night Caribbean itineraries from Galveston, hitting destinations like Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas, Roatan in Honduras, and Cozumel in Mexico—including stops at the brand-new Royal Beach Club Cozumel.
This is huge for several reasons. First, if you live anywhere in Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, or the surrounding states, you just got access to the world’s largest, newest cruise ship without dealing with expensive flights to Miami. Second, Galveston is about to become an absolute cruise hub.
Icon Won’t Be Sailing Alone
Royal Caribbean isn’t just sending Icon to Texas—they’re going all-in on Galveston. Liberty of the Seas will start four- to eight-night Caribbean cruises from Galveston in April 2027, and Symphony of the Seas will also be homeporting there with similar itineraries.
For context, Symphony of the Seas is the second-largest cruise ship in the world. Between Icon, Symphony, and Liberty, Galveston is getting three major ships in 2027. That’s not an expansion—that’s a statement.
Why This Matters
Royal Caribbean CEO Michael Bayley has been teasing this move for a while. At the Star of the Seas launch party last August, he promised Galveston would get Icon, saying, “It’s coming, baby.” And he wasn’t bluffing.
The Port of Galveston’s zero-energy Royal Caribbean terminal at Pier 10 opened in November 2022 specifically with Icon-class ships in mind. These ships are massive—Icon can accommodate up to 7,600 guests—and not every port can handle that kind of capacity. Galveston can, and Royal Caribbean clearly sees the opportunity.
What Happens Next
Bookings for Icon’s Galveston sailings opened to the general public on November 13, 2025, with early access for Crown & Anchor Society members. If you’ve been eyeing Icon of the Seas but didn’t want to deal with Miami logistics, now’s your chance.
The ship will bid farewell to Florida on August 7, 2027, embarking on a 9-night repositioning cruise that visits Perfect Day at CocoCay, Curacao, and Aruba before arriving in Galveston on August 16. Expect a plaque exchange ceremony and plenty of fanfare—this will be Icon’s first-ever visit to Texas.
From there, Icon will operate eight 8-night sailings departing on August 28, September 11, September 25, October 9, October 23, and November 6, all in 2027. Additional six-night itineraries will also be available.
The Bottom Line
Royal Caribbean is betting big on Galveston, and for good reason. With Icon of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas, and Liberty of the Seas all sailing from Texas in 2027, the port is about to become one of the most important cruise hubs in the United States.
For cruisers, this is fantastic news. More ships, more choices, and easier access to world-class Caribbean vacations—all from a port that’s a quick drive for millions of Americans. Miami, you’ve been warned.
