If you’ve been watching Universal Orlando closely, you probably noticed something big is brewing at Islands of Adventure. We’re talking about the Lost Continent—that once-vibrant mythological land that’s been quietly fading into the background for years. Well, the wait is finally over. Universal just cleared hundreds of trees in a backstage area behind the shuttered attractions, and according to Inside the Magic, this signals the beginning of a massive transformation.
What’s Actually Happening
Aerial photos taken in early December 2025 reveal a dramatic change to the landscape behind Poseidon’s Fury and The Eighth Voyage of Sindbad theater. What was once a dense buffer of trees is now bare dirt—a telltale sign that major construction is on the horizon. Universal has cleared a significant backstage section, carving out a pathway that suggests serious development plans are underway.
This isn’t just speculation. Universal Orlando Resort confirmed to the Orlando Business Journal that there will be “construction activity in Lost Continent as part of site planning to ensure the area is ready for any future developments.” Translation: something big is coming, and they’re getting the groundwork done now.
The Numbers Tell the Story
The scope of this project is substantial. Universal filed permits covering seven acres of land, with demolition planned across nearly five acres of “retail, show, and attraction buildings.” That includes the shuttered Poseidon’s Fury attraction and The Eighth Voyage of Sindbad theater—both of which have been closed for years. The good news? Fan-favorite Mythos restaurant and nearby shops are expected to remain open during construction.
What Could Replace the Lost Continent?
Here’s where things get really interesting. The leading rumor—and it’s a strong one—is that we’re looking at a Legend of Zelda-themed land. Think about it: Zelda is a cornerstone of Nintendo’s gaming empire, and while Epic Universe has Super Nintendo World, there wasn’t room for everything Nintendo had to offer. Moving Zelda to Islands of Adventure would give the franchise its own breathing room while expanding Nintendo’s presence across Universal Orlando.
Other possibilities floating around include a Pokemon expansion with interactive trainer battles and kid-friendly theming, or even a Lord of the Rings land (though licensing challenges might complicate that one).
The End of an Era
The Lost Continent has been on borrowed time for a while now. When Islands of Adventure opened in 1999, Lost Continent was one of six original lands—a sprawling fantasy realm with mythological theming. But over the years, it’s been gradually reduced. In 2010, much of the Merlinwood section was rethemed to become part of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade. Dragon Challenge (formerly Dueling Dragons) closed in 2017. The Eighth Voyage of Sindbad shut down in 2018, and Poseidon’s Fury finally closed its doors in 2023.
Now, with trees cleared and permits filed, we’re witnessing the final chapter of the Lost Continent as we’ve known it.
Why This Matters for Your Next Visit
If you’re planning a Universal Orlando trip in the next year or two, here’s what you need to know: construction will be happening, but it’s all happening behind the scenes for now. The visible part of Lost Continent will likely remain accessible until Universal is ready to make the full transition. And if the Zelda rumors pan out, you’ll want to start saving for your return trip—because a fully immersive Zelda land would be an absolute game-changer.
Universal has proven time and again that they know how to build incredible themed experiences. Just look at what they accomplished with Epic Universe, which opened in May 2025 and has already set new standards for theme park design. If they bring that same level of detail and innovation to Islands of Adventure, we’re in for something truly special.
The Lost Continent may be gone, but what’s coming next could be even more magical.
