From Jungle Cruise Skipper to Walt Disney World President — Meet the Man Taking the Helm
Joe Schott, a 40-year Disney veteran who started his career as a Jungle Cruise skipper, has been named the new President of Walt Disney World Resort.
What does it take to run the most visited theme park resort on earth? If you ask Disney, the answer starts with a Jungle Cruise boat.
On May 18, 2026, Disney Experiences Chairman Thomas Mazloum announced that Joe Schott has been named President of Walt Disney World Resort, succeeding Jeff Vahle, who is retiring after a 36-year career with the company. The changes take effect by the end of July 2026. The announcement was reported by WDW Magic and confirmed via The Walt Disney Company’s official newsroom.
A Career That Started on the River
Schott’s story is genuinely remarkable. He began his Disney career as a Jungle Cruise Skipper at Walt Disney World — the very resort he now leads. Forty-plus years later, after tours of duty across three continents, he is coming home.
His resume reads like a tour of Disney’s global footprint:
- President of Disney Signature Experiences — most recently oversaw the launches of the Disney Destiny and Disney Adventure cruise ships
- President and General Manager of Shanghai Disney Resort — guided the resort past 100 million guests in under a decade and led the opening of the Zootopia-themed land
- Chief Operating Officer at Disneyland Paris
- Executive Managing Director at Walt Disney Attractions Japan
This is not a figurehead appointment. Schott brings decades of operational leadership across some of Disney’s most complex and demanding international properties.
What This Means for Walt Disney World
Schott takes the reins at what is arguably the most consequential moment in Walt Disney World’s history since EPCOT opened in 1982. The resort is in the midst of a massive multi-year expansion that includes:
- Magic Kingdom: The Cars-themed Piston Peak National Park area and a new Villains land
- Animal Kingdom: The 11-acre Tropical Americas expansion featuring Encanto and Indiana Jones attractions
- Hollywood Studios: The return of a Disney Animation experience, the newly opened Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets, and a Monsters, Inc.-themed land
Schott won’t just be cutting ribbons on completed projects. He’ll be making real decisions about how these lands are delivered, staffed, and operated. His international experience — particularly navigating the complexity of Shanghai Disney Resort’s rapid growth — suggests he is well-prepared for the scope of what lies ahead.
The Broader Leadership Shuffle
The Schott announcement is part of a wider set of changes at Disney Experiences. With Schott moving from Disney Signature Experiences to Walt Disney World, Natacha Rafalski steps into his former role as President of Disney Signature Experiences. Rafalski has led Disneyland Paris since 2018, overseeing more than 20,000 Cast Members and the landmark transformation of Walt Disney Studios Park into Disney Adventure World.
Her former seat at Disneyland Paris goes to Christophe Murphy, a 35-year Disney veteran who was part of the original pre-opening team for the park in 1991.
In a statement, Mazloum said the appointments “reflect the depth of leadership talent driving Disney Experiences.”
Why We’re Paying Attention
Leadership announcements can feel like inside baseball, but this one matters for guests. The President of Walt Disney World sets the tone for operations, cast culture, and guest experience at the ground level. Schott’s background — spanning ride operations, resort management, cruise fleet expansion, and international park development — gives him credibility across every dimension of what Disney World actually is.
The fact that he started as a skipper cracking puns on the Jungle Cruise and ends up running the whole resort is also, frankly, a great story.
We’ll be watching closely to see what direction Schott takes once he officially assumes the role this summer.
