If you’re planning a Disneyland trip in January, you might want to check the refurbishment calendar before you book. According to the Orange County Register, Disneyland and Disney California Adventure are shutting down 11 attractions throughout January for seasonal maintenance—and one of them is making history.
Rise of the Resistance Gets Its First-Ever Closure
The biggest news? Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance is closing January 20 for its first scheduled refurbishment since the attraction opened in 2020. That’s right—this marquee Galaxy’s Edge ride has been running non-stop for nearly five years without a major maintenance closure.
And here’s the kicker: Disney hasn’t announced a reopening date yet. For an attraction this complex and popular, that’s not exactly surprising, but it does mean January Star Wars fans might be out of luck.
The Full Closure List
Here’s what’s going dark in January across both parks:
Disneyland Park:
- Rise of the Resistance (January 20, no return date)
- Haunted Mansion (January 12-22)
- It’s a Small World (starts January 26)
- Mark Twain Riverboat (January 12-15)
- Sailing Ship Columbia (starts January 26)
- Pixie Hollow (select Tuesdays and Thursdays)
- Fantasmic nighttime show (multiple dates)
Disney California Adventure:
- Incredicoaster (starts January 5)
- Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind (January 5-22)
- Grizzly River Run (starts January 5)
- Redwood Creek Challenge Trail (starts January 8)
Why January?
This isn’t random. January is traditionally when Disney takes down holiday overlays and performs routine maintenance after the grueling holiday season. Both Haunted Mansion and It’s a Small World need to shed their festive decorations and return to their year-round versions—a process that typically takes about two weeks for Small World.
The timing makes sense from a business perspective too. After Christmas week crowds, January sees a significant drop in attendance before spring break season kicks in. Better to close attractions when fewer guests are affected.
What This Means for Guests
If you’ve got a January Disneyland trip booked, here’s the reality: you’re looking at potentially 11 fewer experiences across both parks, including some headliners. Rise of the Resistance alone is worth planning a Galaxy’s Edge visit around, and losing Haunted Mansion and Small World simultaneously removes two Fantasyland classics from the roster.
We get it—maintenance is necessary. These attractions run nearly 365 days a year under intense demand. But when you’re spending premium money on park tickets, especially during what’s supposed to be a slower, more manageable time to visit, having 11 closures stings a bit.
The good news? Most of these closures have defined end dates (except Rise and a few others). The bad news? You’ll want to check Disney’s official refurbishment calendar before finalizing any January plans, because nothing ruins a magic kingdom visit quite like discovering your must-do attraction is behind construction walls.
