Eight Disneyland Attractions Are Closing This Week—And Some Won’t Reopen Until Spring

If you’re planning a trip to Disneyland in January, you’ll want to double-check the refurbishment calendar before you go. Starting this week, eight rides and attractions across Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure will temporarily close their doors for maintenance—and some of these closures will last well into spring.

According to AllEars.Net, the post-holiday refurbishment season is officially underway at the Disneyland Resort. While most of these closures are routine seasonal maintenance—particularly for attractions that need to remove their Christmas overlays—a few are longer-term projects that will keep fan-favorite rides offline for months.

What’s Closing This Month

Here’s the complete breakdown of what’s going down for refurbishment in January:

Disneyland Park

The Disneyland Monorail kicks things off with a closure starting January 6th, though Disney hasn’t announced a reopening date yet. This is a significant closure since the Monorail isn’t just an attraction—it’s also a legitimate transportation option between Disneyland Park and the Downtown Disney District.

The Mark Twain Riverboat will be out of commission from January 6-10 for a brief maintenance window.

Haunted Mansion closes January 7-17 as it transitions out of its beloved Haunted Mansion Holiday overlay and returns to its classic year-round theming. If you’re a fan of Jack Skellington’s takeover of the mansion, you’ve got just a couple more days to experience it.

The Disneyland Railroad starts a refurbishment on January 13th with no announced reopening date. This is one of Walt Disney’s original attractions from opening day in 1955, so any extended closure is noteworthy.

Perhaps the most significant closure is “it’s a small world,” which will close on January 21st and isn’t expected to reopen until sometime in spring. That’s potentially a 2-3 month closure for one of Disneyland’s most iconic attractions as it removes its holiday overlay and receives necessary maintenance.

Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln (which alternates with Walt Disney — A Magical Life) remains closed until May 16th, though this closure was announced previously.

Disney California Adventure

Over at Disney California Adventure, Grizzly River Run will close from January 6 through March 13. This is fairly standard operating procedure—Disney tends to take its water attractions offline during the coldest months of the year, both for refurbishment and because the “you will get wet, you may get soaked” experience is considerably less appealing when temperatures drop.

The Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind will be down from January 6-23, a relatively brief closure compared to some of the others.

What This Means for Your Visit

If you’re visiting Disneyland in January or early February, the park will still have plenty to offer—but you’ll definitely notice some gaps in the attraction lineup. The Monorail closure means you’ll need to walk or take the tram from the parking structures. The Railroad being down removes one of the best ways to get around Disneyland Park and take a break from the crowds.

And if you’ve got young kids who live for “it’s a small world,” you’ll want to plan your trip for late January before it closes, or wait until spring when it reopens.

The good news? Post-holiday season typically brings lower crowd levels, especially mid-week. So while you’ll have fewer attractions to choose from, you’ll likely spend less time in line for the ones that are open.

Disney has built a well-deserved reputation for maintaining its attractions to exacting standards, and these seasonal refurbishments are a big part of that commitment. Still, it’s worth checking the official Disneyland refurbishment calendar before you finalize your vacation plans—especially if you’ve got a must-ride list of attractions you don’t want to miss.

Additional Closures to Note

Beyond the eight ride closures, Jolly Holiday Bakery Cafe is also closing January 7th for refurbishment, and the Tinker Bell’s Pixie Hollow meet-and-greet remains closed with no reopening date announced.

We understand that attraction refurbishments can be disappointing when they impact your vacation plans, but they’re essential for keeping these beloved rides running smoothly and safely for years to come. The silver lining? When these attractions reopen, they’ll be freshly maintained and ready to deliver the magic we’ve come to expect from Disneyland.
