Darth Vader Is Finally Coming to Batuu — and He's Bringing the Whole Original Trilogy With Him
Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge at Disneyland is expanding its timeline to include original trilogy characters like Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Leia Organa starting April 29, 2026.
Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge has always had an identity problem. Since the land opened in 2019, guests wandered the outpost of Black Spire on Batuu during a murky, undefined point in the Star Wars timeline — familiar enough to feel like Star Wars, but oddly devoid of the characters most people grew up with. No Luke. No Leia. No Han. Certainly no Darth Vader.
That changes today.
As of April 29, 2026, Disney has officially expanded the Galaxy’s Edge timeline at Disneyland Resort, bringing original trilogy-era characters to Batuu for the first time. The land will now span multiple Star Wars eras simultaneously — from the Galactic Civil War all the way through the New Republic and the Age of the Resistance.
Who You’ll Find on Batuu Now
The character additions are substantial. Darth Vader himself will stalk the outpost alongside Imperial Stormtroopers, searching for Luke Skywalker near the TIE Echelon. Luke, meanwhile, wanders Batuu seeking knowledge of the Force and lightsaber artifacts. Leia Organa appears near the Millennium Falcon, recruiting visitors to help keep Luke safe. Han Solo lingers around his prized ship — and predictably, near the cantina. Chewbacca accompanies Han, as he always does.
On the other end of the timeline, Ahsoka Tano and the Mandalorian with Grogu will appear near the marketplace. Rey remains stationed in the Resistance camp area on the outskirts of the land.
The practical effect: Batuu is now teeming with characters across decades of Star Wars history, all coexisting on this remote outpost at the edge of the galaxy. It’s a narrative stretch, certainly — but it’s also far more satisfying than wandering a lavishly detailed land without recognizing a single face.
The Land Itself Is Changing Too
Disney isn’t just dropping new characters into the existing environment. Several shops are being updated to reflect the expanded timeline. First Order Cargo is transforming into Black Spire Surplus, a military salvage shop featuring both Imperial and Rebel artifacts. Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities will display period-appropriate items from different eras. Even the Droid Depot is getting a touch of continuity, featuring an earlier generation of the Mubo family.
Perhaps the most welcome change is sonic: John Williams’ full orchestral catalog will now play throughout the land, including the main Star Wars theme, the Force Theme, and the iconic Cantina Band. For anyone who found it strange to walk past the Millennium Falcon without hearing a note of the main title, that particular wrong is now being righted.
Why This Matters
The original criticism of Galaxy’s Edge — that it was beautifully built but emotionally disconnected — largely came down to the absence of the characters audiences most associate with Star Wars. Disney made a deliberate creative choice in 2019 to set the land in a new era, populated by new characters, in an attempt to push the franchise forward. Guests, by and large, were not interested.
What’s happening today at Disneyland represents a meaningful course correction. Bringing Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Leia Organa to Batuu acknowledges what guests have been asking for since opening day. The land is still original and immersive — the bones are excellent — but now it has the emotional anchors that can turn a technically impressive environment into a genuinely memorable one.
For anyone planning a Disneyland visit, this expansion is a legitimate reason to prioritize Galaxy’s Edge on your itinerary. Whether you grew up with the original trilogy or simply want to see what Darth Vader looks like stalking through an alien marketplace, today marks the day Batuu finally feels complete.
What About Walt Disney World?
One important note: these changes are specific to Disneyland in California. Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida will not be expanding its timeline to include original trilogy characters and will remain set in the sequel trilogy era. If you want the full multi-era experience, Disneyland is the destination.
