It’s So Cold in Florida Right Now That BOTH Disney Water Parks Are Closed—And One Isn’t Even Open for the Season

When you think of New Year’s Eve in Florida, you probably picture warm sunshine and maybe a refreshing dip in a water park. Not this year. A massive cold front has swept across Central Florida, forcing Disney World to shut down Typhoon Lagoon just as New Year’s Eve crowds descend on the parks—and with Blizzard Beach already closed for its seasonal maintenance rotation, Disney literally has zero water parks available right now.

According to Laughing Place, Walt Disney World is keeping Typhoon Lagoon closed from December 30th through January 1st, 2026, due to cooler temperatures in the area. The timing couldn’t be worse for guests hoping to enjoy the water park during one of the busiest vacation weeks of the year.

Just How Cold Are We Talking?

FOX 35 Orlando reported that “a massive rush of cold air will cross Florida on Tuesday, causing morning and evening low temperatures to fall into the 30s and 40s for much of Orlando and Central Florida.” Weather forecasts predict Orlando will experience a high of just 59 degrees Fahrenheit and a low of 39 degrees on Wednesday, December 31st.

A Cold Weather Advisory has been issued for Wednesday covering both Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Orlando Resort areas, with the weather service recommending that visitors “use caution while traveling outside.”

For context, that’s colder than many northern cities experience on a mild spring day—but for Florida in late December, when tourists arrive expecting balmy weather, it’s a significant disruption.

This Isn’t the First Time This Month

This sort of closure is actually common this time of year, but it’s still frustrating for guests who planned their vacations around water park access. Earlier in December, Typhoon Lagoon was also closed on December 15th and 16th when forecasts called for a high of 66 degrees with a low of 52 degrees.

The difference this time? The cold snap is hitting during peak holiday travel season, and with Blizzard Beach already offline for its routine maintenance closure, there’s literally no backup option for water park fans.

Universal Volcano Bay Is Also Shut Down

Disney isn’t alone in dealing with the cold weather impact. Universal Orlando Resort confirmed through social media that Volcano Bay will be closed on both Tuesday, December 30th, and Wednesday, December 31st, 2025. So if you were hoping to hop over to Universal for some water slides, you’re out of luck there too.

When Will Typhoon Lagoon Reopen?

The good news is that this cold snap isn’t expected to last long. Typhoon Lagoon is planning to reopen on Friday, January 2nd, when temperatures should climb back up to more Florida-appropriate levels.

Looking further ahead, Typhoon Lagoon is currently scheduled to close for the season on February 14, 2026, with Blizzard Beach reopening the very next day on February 15th. So if you’re planning a winter trip to Disney World and water parks are a must-have, you’ll want to time your visit carefully around these rotating closures—and keep an eye on the weather forecast.

For now, guests visiting Disney World on New Year’s Eve will have to stick to the four main theme parks (which are open with extended hours for the holiday) and leave their swimsuits packed. Sometimes even the Sunshine State can’t escape winter.
