NCL's Newest Ship Just Left Italy—And It's Heading Straight for Miami

Norwegian Cruise Line just officially took delivery of Norwegian Luna on March 5, 2026, according to NCL’s official newsroom. The ship — the 21st in NCL’s fleet and the second vessel in the Prima Plus Class — was handed over at Fincantieri’s Marghera shipyard in Venice, Italy. It departs for a transatlantic crossing to Miami on March 10, with arrival scheduled for March 23 and an official christening ceremony at PortMiami set for March 27.

If you’ve been eyeing a Caribbean cruise out of Miami for spring or summer 2026, this just became your most interesting option.

What Norwegian Luna Actually Is

Norwegian Luna is the second Prima Plus Class ship, following Norwegian Prima (which debuted in 2022). The “Plus” designation matters — it means the ship is roughly 10% larger than the original Prima class, and that extra size translates directly into more space per passenger rather than simply cramming in more guests.

The numbers: 156,000 gross tons, 1,053 feet long, 1,809 staterooms, and a capacity of 3,565 passengers at double occupancy. With 17 dining venues and 18 bars and lounges, the food and drink ratio is one of the more generous setups at sea right now.

NCL President Marc Kazlauskas called out the ship’s philosophy at delivery: “She delivers freedom, flexibility and thoughtfully curated experiences, allowing guests to enjoy their vacation exactly how they want, with ease.”

The Headline Feature: A Hybrid Rollercoaster-Waterslide

Norwegian Luna debuts the Aqua Slidecoaster, a ride the line is billing as the fastest and longest hybrid rollercoaster-waterslide at sea. If that sounds like Norwegian is competing directly with Royal Caribbean for the title of most outrageous onboard thrill, that’s because they are — and this is a credible entry in that race.

Beyond the Slidecoaster, the ship features:

  • Luna Midway — an outdoor carnival-style games area
  • Moon Climber — a multi-level obstacle course
  • Glow Court — an interactive LED floor complex
  • The Haven by Norwegian — NCL’s ship-within-a-ship suite experience, which offers private dining, pool, and butler service for guests who want to upgrade significantly

Entertainment Worth Noting

Norwegian Luna launches with two headline shows. “Elton: A Celebration of Elton John” brings a full tribute concert experience to the ship’s theater. The second, “HIKO: Innovation Meets Wonder,” is described as a futuristic performance blending technology and live action. For families or anyone who wants a proper evening entertainment program rather than a poolside cover band, those are legitimate draws.

The Miami Schedule

Norwegian Luna’s first year of service will be built around Miami homeporting. Here’s what the calendar looks like:

  • March 10–23, 2026: 13-night transatlantic repositioning voyage from Civitavecchia (Rome) to Miami — this is the first chance to sail her
  • March 27, 2026: Official christening at PortMiami
  • April 11–November 7, 2026: Eastern Caribbean sailings including Puerto Plata (Dominican Republic), St. Thomas (U.S. Virgin Islands), and Great Stirrup Cay, NCL’s private island in the Bahamas
  • November 2026: Shift to Western Caribbean itineraries
  • April 6, 2027: Repositions to New York for Bermuda voyages

For East Coast travelers who don’t want to fly to a cruise port, that 2027 New York-to-Bermuda deployment is worth bookmarking now.

Why This Matters Right Now

The delivery of Norwegian Luna comes at a moment when NCL has had some financial headwinds to navigate, including a slower early 2025 than the line would have liked. A new flagship-class ship hitting Miami — one of the most competitive and visible homeports in North America — is a statement that NCL is still swinging for relevance in a market dominated by Royal Caribbean’s megaships and Carnival’s sheer volume.

The Prima Plus Class was designed specifically to close the experiential gap with the competition. Norwegian Luna’s combination of the Aqua Slidecoaster, Haven suite experience, and dense dining and entertainment options gives NCL a genuine answer to the question of why a traveler should choose them over a larger Royal Caribbean vessel.

The transatlantic crossing departing March 10 is still available for booking through NCL’s website, and Caribbean sailings from April onward are open. If the March 27 christening event generates any kind of buzz — and NCL tends to put real effort into those ceremonies — expect the early sailings to fill faster than the current booking pace suggests.

Norwegian Luna is officially NCL’s ship. Now the question is whether Miami’s cruising public decides it’s worth the ticket.
