Port Canaveral Just Knocked Miami Out of the Top Spot—And It’s Now the Busiest Cruise Port in the World

If you’ve been cruising out of Port Canaveral lately, you’ve probably noticed it feels busier than ever. Turns out, there’s a reason for that. Port Canaveral just officially became the world’s busiest cruise port—edging out PortMiami for the title.

According to FOX 35 Orlando, Port Canaveral welcomed 8.6 million passengers in fiscal year 2025, a 13% jump from the 7.5 million it handled in 2024. Meanwhile, PortMiami processed 8.5 million passengers during the same period. The numbers are close, but Port Canaveral takes the crown.

This is only the second time Port Canaveral has claimed the busiest port title. The first was back in 2022, when the cruise industry was still in recovery mode following the COVID-19 pandemic.

What’s Fueling Port Canaveral’s Growth?

Port Canaveral’s rise to the top isn’t exactly a mystery. The port operates six cruise terminals serving seven different cruise lines, and it’s home to some of the world’s largest and newest ships. Royal Caribbean’s Utopia of the Seas and Star of the Seas both call Port Canaveral home, as does Carnival’s Mardi Gras. Disney Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, and MSC Cruises also operate ships out of the port.

In fact, Royal Caribbean’s Star of the Seas—the world’s largest cruise ship—arrived in August, adding even more capacity and drawing more cruisers to the port. Port Canaveral also welcomed Princess Cruises and Celebrity Cruises for the first time last winter, broadening its appeal to different segments of the cruise market.

Port CEO Capt. John Murray told FOX 35 that “Earning this distinction is a direct reflection of our ongoing commitment and focused efforts to be the best port possible, providing a high-quality experience.”

What This Means for Cruisers

For travelers, Port Canaveral’s growth is a double-edged sword. On one hand, having the world’s busiest cruise port in Central Florida means more sailing options, more cruise lines to choose from, and more frequent departures. If you live in Florida or anywhere in the Southeast, getting to your cruise just got easier.

On the other hand, more passengers means more crowds—especially during peak travel periods. If you’re sailing out of Port Canaveral, plan to arrive early for embarkation and give yourself extra time for parking and security.

Port Canaveral Isn’t Slowing Down

The port isn’t resting on its laurels. A massive $912 million, five-year capital improvement initiative called “Port Canaveral Advantage” is already underway. The plan includes expanding two existing terminals, developing a seventh cruise terminal, adding more parking facilities, and deploying new technology to make the passenger experience smoother and more convenient.

Port Canaveral is already forecasting it will top 9 million passenger movements in 2026. If that happens, the gap between Canaveral and Miami will only widen.

For now, Port Canaveral is riding high as the world’s busiest cruise port. And if you’re planning a cruise out of Central Florida anytime soon, you’re part of the reason why.
