Princess Cruises Just Turned Its Newest Ship Into a Massive Floating Garden—And 28 Million People Watched It Sail Down the Street

Princess Cruises kicked off 2026 with one of the most spectacular marketing stunts in cruise industry history. On January 1st, the cruise line unveiled a jaw-dropping 55-foot replica of its newest ship, Star Princess, at the 137th Rose Parade in Pasadena—completely covered in over 300,000 fresh flowers.

According to Princess Cruises official announcement, the “Together in the Magic of Alaska” float stretched 55 feet long and stood 21 feet high, showcasing the cruise lines massive expansion in Alaska for the 2026 season. And it was not just big—it was breathtakingly detailed.

A Floating Masterpiece Made of Flowers

The float was designed and constructed by Artistic Entertainment Services, and every inch was covered in natural materials. Towering glaciers were crafted from crushed white chrysanthemums. The ship itself shimmered with silverleaf protea, coconut, blue statice, and lunaria. Twenty-one-foot pine and spruce trees created an authentic forest backdrop.

But here is where it gets really impressive: Princess incorporated Alaskas state flower, the Forget-Me-Not (blue tweedia), along with iris, hydrangea, dendrobium orchids, ocean mums, gypsophila, delphinium, larkspur, yarrow, asters, campanula, and astilbe to create an authentic representation of Alaskas natural beauty.

The wildlife stole the show, though. Moving elements depicted whales breaching, sea otters floating, eagles soaring overhead, bears catching salmon, and even a moose—all crafted from natural fibers like palm fiber, cornsilk, grasses, and seeds.

Why Alaska? Why Now?

This was not just a pretty parade float. Princess Cruises is making a massive bet on Alaska in 2026, and they wanted everyone to know about it.

As the number one cruise line in Alaska, Princess is launching its biggest season ever this year. We are talking eight ships, 180 departures, and 19 destinations across the Alaska cruise season. The star of the show is the new Star Princess, a 177,800-ton Sphere Class vessel designed to accommodate 4,300 guests.

Star Princess features some seriously innovative design elements, including The Dome relaxation space and a distinctive sphere-shaped Piazza with floor-to-ceiling windows. The ship will sail weekly seven-day Inside Passage Alaska cruises roundtrip from Seattle from May 3 through September 19, 2026.

The Numbers Are Staggering

The Rose Parade is not just any local event. It drew 800,000 spectators along its 5.5-mile route in Pasadena, and more than 28 million U.S. television viewers tuned in. Millions more watched worldwide.

That is a marketing reach most cruise lines could only dream of—and Princess delivered it with a float covered in flowers instead of a traditional commercial.

In a fun twist, actress Jill Whelan christened the float. But instead of the traditional champagne bottle, they used tequila. Because apparently even parade floats get the cruise ship christening treatment.

What This Means for Alaska Cruisers

The massive investment in Alaska—both in ships and marketing—signals that Princess is going all-in on this destination. With eight ships deployed to the region and 180 departures scheduled, there has never been more opportunity to sail Alaska with Princess.

The debut of Star Princess represents the latest in cruise ship innovation, with features specifically designed to enhance the Alaska experience. Those floor-to-ceiling windows in the Piazza? Perfect for glacier viewing. The Dome relaxation space? Ideal for taking in Alaskas midnight sun.

If you have been considering an Alaska cruise, 2026 is shaping up to be the year to do it. Princess is clearly betting big on the destination, and they are bringing their newest, most innovative ship to lead the charge.

And if you missed the float rolling down Colorado Boulevard on New Years Day, you missed something special—300,000 flowers arranged into a moving work of art that captured everything magical about cruising Alaska.
