Royal Caribbean's Hero of the Seas Is Coming — and It's Bigger Than Anything You've Seen Before
Royal Caribbean officially unveiled Hero of the Seas, the fourth Icon Class ship, arriving in Miami in August 2027 with nine pools, 28 dining venues, and a three-story family suite.
Royal Caribbean just pulled back the curtain on its next Icon Class ship, and the details are genuinely hard to believe. The cruise line officially unveiled Hero of the Seas this week, confirming it as the fourth vessel in the Icon Class lineup. It arrives in Miami in August 2027, and bookings opened to the general public on April 2, 2026 — meaning you can book it right now.
Records It’s Already Breaking
Before the ship even sets sail, it’s setting records on paper.
Hero of the Seas will carry nine pools — the most of any cruise ship at sea. It will also offer 28 dining venues, another record. CEO Michael Bayley put it plainly: “Icon Class truly set a new standard for family vacations, and Hero of the Seas takes that vision even further.”
That’s not marketing spin. The original Icon of the Seas was already the largest cruise ship in the world when it debuted. Hero is built on that foundation and adds more of everything.
What’s Actually New
Some of the most interesting additions are in the waterpark, Category 6, which is already billed as the largest waterpark at sea. Hero adds two new family raft slides — including the first funnel raft slide at sea — along with new twists on the mat-racing Storm Chasers attraction. For thrill-seekers, Crown’s Edge, the skywalk and zip line experience 154 feet above the ocean, returns as well.
The pool situation gets a significant upgrade too. A new Coconut Cove Caribbean-themed pool area joins the lineup, and The Hideaway — the adults-only double pool area — now features the largest swim-up bar at sea.
The Accommodations Are Something Else
If you’ve been following the reaction online to Hero of the Seas, you’ve probably seen the conversation around the Ultimate Family Treehouse suite. It’s a three-story, three-deck accommodation that sleeps up to 12 guests. It’s been described by some corners of the internet as absurd. Others are already looking at pricing.
The ship also introduces a new Ultimate Family Townhouse, a three-level suite designed specifically for multigenerational travel. Royal Caribbean is clearly betting that families who want to travel together — grandparents, parents, and kids all in one booking — are a major growth market. Based on trends we’ve seen across the industry, that bet looks reasonable.
For families who don’t need the suite-tier options, there are also new Family Infinite Ocean View Balconies and Surfside Family Suites.
The Dining Lineup
Twenty-eight restaurants is a lot to absorb, but a few stand out. Orleans Parish Supper Club brings a jazz-and-Cajun/Creole concept that’s new to the Icon Class. Royal Railway — Hero Station is an immersive train-themed dining experience. The AquaDome Market food hall returns with four new concepts added.
The familiar favorites — Chops Grille, Giovanni’s, Hooked Seafood, Izumi — are back as well. Cooking classes are also available for all ages, which is a nice touch for families looking for something more interactive than just sitting down for dinner.
Where It Sails
Hero of the Seas will homeport in Miami and operate 7-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries. Ports of call include Perfect Day at CocoCay (Royal Caribbean’s private island in the Bahamas), Roatan in Honduras, Cozumel and Costa Maya in Mexico, Philipsburg in St. Maarten, and Charlotte Amalie in St. Thomas.
The Caribbean rotation is the same proven formula that made Icon of the Seas a hit. Miami homeporting keeps it accessible for the large Florida drive market, and the CocoCay stop gives Royal Caribbean full control over one of the most popular days of any cruise itinerary.
Should You Book Now?
General booking opened today, April 2. Crown and Anchor Society loyalty members had a one-day head start beginning April 1.
Hero doesn’t sail until August 2027, so there’s time — but Icon Class ships have consistently been among the fastest-selling products in the cruise industry. If a 2027 summer sailing sounds interesting, getting on the calendar sooner rather than later is the smarter move. We’d recommend reaching out to your travel advisor to lock in the itinerary and cabin category you want before availability tightens.
The Icon Class has reset expectations for what a cruise ship can be. If Hero of the Seas delivers on what Royal Caribbean is promising, the bar is about to move again.
