Disney World fans, listen up. If you’ve ever tried to snag a seat at Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto, you know the drill: show up, put your name on a list, and wait around hoping your party gets called. It’s been a frustrating process for one of the resort’s most beloved—and hardest to get into—bars.
That all changed this week.
According to WDW News Today, Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort has officially added a mobile walk-up waitlist to the My Disney Experience app. Instead of hovering near the entrance and hoping your name gets called, guests can now join the waitlist directly from their phones.
There’s just one catch: you must be physically at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort to join the list. No gaming the system from your hotel room across property.
Why This Is a Huge Deal
For years, Trader Sam’s has operated on a walk-up-only basis with no advance reservations. The intimate tiki bar—with its themed cocktails, interactive effects, and immersive decor—has a cult following, but extremely limited seating. On busy evenings, waits can stretch hours, and there’s been no way to check your place in line without standing nearby.
Now, you can add your name to the digital queue and go explore the Polynesian, grab a bite at Kona Cafe, or relax by the pool while you wait for a notification. It’s a simple change that makes a notoriously difficult reservation process infinitely more manageable.
But before you get too excited, let’s talk reality.
The Bad News: It’s Still REALLY Hard to Get In
According to the WDW News Today report, when they checked the My Disney Experience app for walk-up availability, open timeslots for the day had already booked out. Even with the new mobile system and extended hours (more on that in a second), Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto remains one of Walt Disney World’s highest-demand bars.
The mobile waitlist doesn’t create more seats. It just makes the process of waiting for those seats less painful.
Availability is still extremely limited, and the waitlist can fill up quickly—especially during busy evenings and holiday periods. If you’re planning a trip and Trader Sam’s is a must-do, you’ll still need to plan ahead and join the waitlist as early in the day as possible.
Extended Hours Give You a Better Shot
Here’s the silver lining: Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto has also extended its operating hours. According to Walt Disney World’s operating calendar, the Grot to is now open daily from 11:00 AM to 12:00 AM through at least February 14, 2026.
That’s a massive change from the previous 3:00 PM opening time. Instead of a narrow window in the late afternoon and evening, guests now have a much larger timeframe to stop by and join the waitlist.
The outdoor Trader Sam’s Tiki Terrace has also received extended hours and now operates daily from 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM. While the Terrace doesn’t have the interactive show elements of the Grotto, it offers the same themed cocktails and appetizers in a more relaxed, open-air setting—and it’s typically easier to get into.
The Fine Print
A few important things to keep in mind:
Entry rules haven’t changed. The Grotto is 21 and over only after 8:00 PM, so families with kids need to plan accordingly.
No advance reservations. Despite the mobile waitlist, Trader Sam’s still doesn’t accept advance dining reservations. It’s walk-up (or app-up) only.
Waitlists fill up fast. Just because you can join from your phone doesn’t mean there will be availability. On busy days, all slots may be claimed within hours of opening.
You need to be on property. The app won’t let you join the waitlist unless you’re physically at the Polynesian, so don’t try to add your name from Magic Kingdom or your off-site hotel.
What This Means for Your Next Trip
If Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto is on your Disney World bucket list, the new mobile waitlist is genuinely good news—but it’s not a magic bullet. You’ll still need strategy.
Here’s what we recommend:
Get there early. With the new 11:00 AM opening time, consider stopping by the Polynesian right when the waitlist opens. Mid-morning and early afternoon are your best bet for finding availability.
Be flexible. If the Grotto waitlist is full, check the Tiki Terrace. You’ll still get the tropical vibes and signature drinks, just without the show effects.
Monitor the app. Waitlists can fluctuate as parties cancel or miss their window. If you don’t see availability initially, check back periodically throughout the day.
Plan a backup. Don’t bank your entire evening on Trader Sam’s. Have a Plan B in case the waitlist fills before you can join.
The mobile waitlist is a step in the right direction for one of Disney World’s most notoriously difficult venues to access. It won’t solve the capacity problem, but it will save you from standing around aimlessly while you wait. And in the world of Disney planning, that’s a win.
Now if only they’d add more seats.
