Universal's First European Theme Park Finally Has a Name — and a £7.3 Billion Commitment Behind It

Universal United Kingdom Resort is officially the name of the company's first European theme park, set to open in 2031 near Bedford — and the UK government just put £1.3 billion of skin in the game.

Universal's First European Theme Park Finally Has a Name — and a £7.3 Billion Commitment Behind It

For years, Universal’s planned UK theme park was more rumor than reality — a well-documented land acquisition in Bedfordshire, some planning permits, and a lot of excitement but few concrete details. That changed on June 3, 2026, when Universal officially revealed the park’s name, logo, and a staggering financial commitment that makes it clear this project is very much happening.

The park will be called Universal United Kingdom Resort, and it’s coming in 2031.

What Was Announced

According to Inside Universal, alongside the name and logo reveal, Comcast NBCUniversal and the British government jointly announced a combined £7.3 billion investment in the project. Comcast is committing £5 billion during construction and an additional £1 billion over the first decade of operation. The UK government is investing £1.3 billion in regional and local infrastructure to support the resort.

That is not a small bet. That is a full-throated, all-in commitment — and the kind of financial backing that turns ambitious plans into steel and concrete.

Brian Roberts, Comcast Chair, called it “a historic partnership” and described the moment as “special for our company as we bring our first Universal theme park and resort to Europe.” Lisa Nandy, the UK’s Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, called the investment “a huge vote of confidence in the U.K.”

The Resort

Universal United Kingdom Resort will be located on a 476-acre parcel of land roughly three miles south of Bedford — about 45 minutes outside London. The planned development goes well beyond a single theme park. The resort will include a 500-room hotel and an integrated retail, dining, and entertainment complex, making it a full destination rather than a day-trip attraction.

Construction has actually already begun — groundwork started in January 2026 — and over 100 people are already employed on the project. The 2031 opening target is ambitious but not unrealistic given the construction start.

The Scale of the Economic Ambition

The numbers projected for this resort are genuinely eye-opening. According to Variety’s coverage, the resort is expected to create roughly 28,000 jobs between construction and permanent operations, and is projected to generate nearly £50 billion in economic benefit to the UK by 2055.

That projection puts it squarely in the conversation as one of the most significant tourism infrastructure investments in British history. For context, this is a country that does not currently have a major international-caliber theme park — and Universal is about to change that in a dramatic way.

Why This Matters for Theme Park Fans

We’re still five years out from opening day, so there’s no confirmed list of lands or attractions yet. But this announcement does a few important things:

It moves the project from “probable” to “inevitable.” With £7.3 billion committed, a name, a logo, active construction, and government infrastructure investment underway, Universal United Kingdom Resort is no longer a concept — it’s a project with a completion date.

It also signals that Universal’s global expansion ambitions are very real. Between Epic Universe in Orlando (open since May 2025), Universal Kids Resort opening next month in Frisco, Texas, and now a full European resort under construction, Universal Destinations & Experiences is executing one of the most aggressive theme park expansion strategies the industry has ever seen.

For UK and European guests who have historically had to fly to Florida or California to experience a full Universal resort, 2031 cannot come soon enough. And for the global theme park industry, the arrival of a major Universal destination in Europe is going to be a genuinely transformative moment.

We’ll be watching this one closely as land and attraction announcements begin to roll out.
