Vancouver Is About to Be Absolutely Overrun With Cruise Ships—And the Numbers Are Staggering

If you have Alaska on your bucket list for 2026, here is something you need to know before you book: Vancouver is gearing up for the biggest cruise season in the port’s history, and the sheer volume of ships and passengers heading through Canada Place this year is genuinely hard to wrap your head around.

According to Daily Hive, the Port of Vancouver is expecting roughly 1.4 million cruise passengers in 2026 — a new all-time record that tops the previous high set in 2024 by about 5 percent. Nearly 360 ship calls are scheduled throughout the season. To put that in context, the port handled around 300 calls and just under 1.2 million passenger visits in 2025. That is a significant jump in a single year.

Why This Season Is Different

A few things are colliding to make 2026 exceptional. First, five ships are making their Vancouver debut this year: the Azamara Pursuit, Disney Magic, Star Seeker, Brilliant Lady, and Luminara. Virgin Voyages and the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection are both sailing from Vancouver for the first time, adding two high-profile luxury options to the mix.

Disney Cruise Line is also doubling down. The Disney Magic joins the Disney Wonder at Canada Place, giving Disney two ships homeported in Vancouver simultaneously. The Disney Magic kicks off its Vancouver run on May 1 with 20 planned sailings, while the Disney Wonder adds another 21 sailings alongside it. For families planning a Disney cruise to Alaska, that translates to significantly more departure options.

The Economic Weight Behind These Numbers

Port officials are projecting the 2026 cruise season will inject more than $1 billion into the local economy and support over 17,000 jobs. Cruise lines themselves are expected to spend around $660 million on goods and services, and passengers are averaging $450 each during their time in the city.

That is not a small footnote. It makes Vancouver’s cruise season a genuine economic event for the region — one that the city is clearly taking seriously in terms of infrastructure as well. The port already rolled out a facial biometric system at customs back in 2024 that cut processing times by up to 94 percent, dropping average wait times from two to three minutes down to under 10 seconds. That kind of throughput matters a lot when you are moving 1.4 million people through a single terminal.

One More Complication Worth Knowing

If you are planning to be in Vancouver this summer, know that the 2026 FIFA World Cup is also happening — with BC Place hosting seven matches. The city’s peak cruise period runs from May 1 through October 4, which overlaps directly with World Cup activity. Hotel availability and pricing in downtown Vancouver will almost certainly reflect that. If your Alaska cruise itinerary has you spending any nights in the city before or after embarkation, it is worth getting accommodations locked in sooner rather than later.

The busiest single day of the season is July 25, when five ships are expected to be in port simultaneously.

What This Means If You Are Planning an Alaska Cruise

More ships and more departure options are generally a good thing for travelers — more competition typically means more flexibility on dates and pricing. But a record-volume season also means a more crowded port city, and any pre- or post-cruise plans in Vancouver should be booked well ahead.

The season technically opened on February 26 when Disney Wonder called during a repositioning voyage from Hawaii to San Diego. The regular Alaska season ramp-up starts in late April and runs through mid-October, when Norwegian Encore closes things out on October 13.

If Alaska has been on your radar, 2026 has the widest variety of ships and itineraries the Pacific Northwest has seen in years. That is worth paying attention to.
