A fire erupted on the World Legacy cruise ship in the early hours of February 20, 2026, killing one crew member and sending four passengers to the hospital — the latest in a string of serious problems for a vessel that has struggled since before it ever welcomed its first paying guests.
According to reporting by Malay Mail, the fire broke out around 4 a.m. local time while the ship was anchored at Raffles Reserved Anchorage, near Pulau Semakau and Pulau Senang in Singapore waters. The blaze started in a lounge area on deck nine. All 224 passengers on board were safely evacuated and brought ashore at HarbourFront Ferry Terminal. The deceased crew member was identified as an Indonesian national, and authorities notified the Indonesian embassy. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
What We Know About the Incident
The World Legacy is a Liberia-registered vessel operated by World Cruises. At the time of the fire, there were 224 passengers and 388 crew members aboard — 612 people in total. The Singapore Maritime and Port Authority (MPA), the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), and the Police Coast Guard all responded to the scene. Marine firefighters from the SCDF extinguished the blaze.
The ship’s own crew acted quickly to contain the fire before authorities arrived. A safety zone was established around the vessel following the incident. Surveyors engaged by the ship’s owners are now assessing the damage and will determine what repairs are needed before the World Legacy is allowed to return to service.
World Cruises issued a statement saying the company was “fully cooperating and prioritising the safety of passengers and crew.”
This Ship Has Been Troubled From the Start
If the World Legacy sounds familiar, it might be because this is not its first rough stretch of news. The ship’s maiden voyage — originally scheduled for mid-December 2025 — was postponed just days before departure, leaving passengers scrambling to make other arrangements. When the ship finally began sailing on December 23rd, guests reported brown tap water, faulty lifts, weak air-conditioning, poor food options, and a check-in process that was described as chaotic. The company offered full refunds and future cruise credits to affected travelers.
Now, just a couple of months into its actual operating life, the World Legacy is back in the headlines for far more serious reasons.
What This Means for Cruise Travelers
We want to be clear: fires on cruise ships are rare, and the industry has extensive safety protocols in place for exactly these kinds of emergencies. The fact that 224 passengers were evacuated without a single passenger fatality — in the middle of the night, from an anchored vessel in Singapore harbor — is a testament to how those drills and procedures work.
That said, the pattern of problems on the World Legacy should give any traveler pause before booking with World Cruises. A postponed maiden voyage, widespread passenger complaints about basic ship operations, and now a fatal fire all within the span of a few months is not a track record that inspires confidence. If you have an upcoming sailing booked with this line, it is worth keeping a close eye on developments as investigators determine the cause of the fire and as surveyors assess when — and whether — the ship can safely return to service.
For everyone else, this is a good reminder to review the safety record and operational history of any cruise line before you book, not just the price and the itinerary.
